Program Description: Individuals seeking mental health therapy often relate comorbidities that remain unresolved or undertreated and are potential drivers of psychosomatic disorders. An understanding of the relationship between the peripheral and central nervous system as well as the gut-brain connection offers an opportunity to problem solve for individuals who may otherwise feel hopeless. This discussion will be aimed at expanding the knowledge and understanding of pain sciences so that the mental health practitioner will be better able to utilize a multidisciplinary approach to care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the basics of chronic and persistent “pain.”
  2. Understand the connection between gut and brain and its role is psychosomatic conditions.
  3. Recognize clients who would benefit from working with holistic, evidence-based practitioners.

Biography:

Dr. Sarah Crawford is the Founder of the Anchor Wellness Center, an integrated health and wellness collaborative aimed to inspire health, reduce barriers to access and increase efficiency of care. Dr. Crawford is a Miami University (FL) trained Physical Therapist with over 11 years of experience in clinical care, healthcare administration, leadership, and innovation. Dr. Crawford is an educator with a focus on expanding the role of physical therapy in the health equation for students, interdisciplinary colleagues, and corporate partners.
