Assessment and Treatment of PTSD: Where Are We Today?

Monday, September 26, 2016

Speaker: Kathleen M. Chard, Ph.D.

2 CEUs for Licensed Psychologists Only

Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects 8% of the population directly each year, but the impact on the family, work and social groups extends far beyond the individual with the disorder. It is important that clinicians understand the biology of PTSD so they can make more informed decisions on diagnosis and treatment. In addition, clinicians should have a basic knowledge of the valid and reliable assessments for children and adults with PTSD. Dr. Chard will review the evidence base for treatments of PTSD including recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, ISTSS and the VA/DoD Guidelines. Finally, Dr. Chard will provide a brief overview of the most supported evidence-based treatments for PTSD, including TF-CBT, Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy.

Kathleen M. Chard, Ph.D. is the Associate Chief of Staff for Research, Director of Trauma Recovery Center at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Chard is the author of the Cognitive Processing Therapy for Sexual Abuse treatment manual and is co-author of the CPT: Military/Veteran manual. In addition, Dr. Chard oversees the dissemination of CPT to VA and Department of Defense clinicians across the United States and Canada. Dr. Chard is an Associate Editor of the Journal for Traumatic Stress and she is an active researcher. She has conducted several funded studies on the treatment and etiology of PTSD and comorbid TBI. She is currently Co-Chair of the 17-site VA study comparing CPT and Prolonged Exposure.
