Speaker: Victor L. Jones, Jr., Ph.D.

Program Description:

 Dr. Jones will review factors related to the assessment and treatment of African-American clients. During the presentation, Dr. Jones will explore important issues related to working with this population, including barriers to treatment and provider challenges. He will also discuss ways to enhance cultural and race-related discussions in the context of clinical work, as well as address racial-related stress/trauma.

Program Objectives:

After completing this workshop, participants will:

  1. Review terms/definitions that are critical in the assessment, conceptualization, and treatment of African-American clients.
  2. Increase understanding of the challenges/concerns, as well as barriers to treatment, that exist in African-American communities.
  3. Explore provider challenges with broaching cultural and race-related discussions.
  4. Consider approaches to overcome challenges and meaningfully engage in cultural and race-related discussions.
  5. Discuss techniques/approaches that may assist in supporting clients experiencing racial-related stress/trauma.

Victor L. Jones, Jr., Ph.D.

Victor Lamarr Jones, Jr., Ph.D., received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Howard University, where he studied a variety of evidence-based therapies and participated in several research projects. He completed his clinical internship in health psychology at the VA Maryland Health Care System/University of Maryland School of Medicine Consortium. Following, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in HIV and Liver Disease at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. Dr. Jones’ experiences have allowed him to work in a variety of interdisciplinary settings (i.e., primary care, palliative and hospice, sub-acute rehab, substance use, chronic pain), conducting individual, group, and couples psychotherapy, pre-surgical evaluations, and psychodiagnostic assessments with clients presenting with a wide range of behavioral, emotional, physical, and spiritual concerns. He is dedicated to providing high-quality services to assist clients in developing and honing skills that will help achieve personal goals, promote overall wellness, and improve quality of life.
